The concrete has been slowly wearing away; being exposed to the elements with bits and pieces crumbling everywhere. It wasn't before long until we were on the 6th floor. Two out of the three staircases were blocked off by the collapsed concrete molds which were supposed to make the 7th floor. We carefully made our way up the staircase which was somewhat accessible and what was laid on the roof top were even more concrete molds; waiting to be set in place for the next pour. After walking through the length of the rooftop, we headed down and decided not to go into the two other buildings, since they were literally next to the guard house. Overall, it was an interesting find which was surprisingly close the downtown area of the city.
A few weeks ago when I was walking to the bus terminal, sometime caught the corner of my eye while I was waiting to cross the street; three buildings, each approximately 6 stories tall stood in the distance. Using daum map, I quickly located what I saw and I knew immediately it was a good location for urban exploring. After a few weeks and a bit of planning, my friends and I set off from the bus terminal to what is known as Jinyeong Apartments. It was approximately a 30 minute walk to the site. Once we arrived, we started scouting for an entry point since the site was still guarded. From what we could observe from the outside, the apartments started construction on the 1st of October 1999 and was supposed to have finished on the 31st of December 2000. What was to be a 10 story apartment complex is now an unfinished concrete shell with only 6 floors. Since it was guarded, we headed into the building which was furthest away from the gate and quietly made our way in. Nature had started reclaiming some of the areas with vines making their way inside. Some of the vine covered a good section of the wall on the first floor. There was not a lot of construction material laying around besides the concrete molds and scaffolding used to create the basic structure of the apartment. Contrary to what we see on K-drama series that we want on our television, there are also places in South Korea that portray a different kind of sadness and fear. If you are going to look at the Jinyeong Apartments, it looks haunted. It seems like a lot of lost spirits chose to live there. It's already old and abandoned that's why I am not surprised with the fact that we share the same sentiments towards the place.
